Thermostat update from Bolinder 1001

Following several enquiries about thermostats for Bolinders, I have had the opportunity! to look inside the
water-cooled exhaust manifold of the motor fitted to Andora. Ok, we intermittently lost compression and had
to lift the head off! (Another story when I have time). The thermostat fitted, well it didn’t, it was floating about
in the housing with no obvious way to retain it and on closer inspection appeared to not be able to control
water flow in any logical fashion. After much head scratching, I decided to have a look at the remains of the
manifold from 1001, which I nearly left behind as no use to man or beast when I bought the remains back.

(Manifold)

The manifold has rusted or frozen into several parts and would not have made a decent pattern and I have a good one on Andora’s motor anyway. Much easing oil over several weeks and I managed to remove the inspection cover. More cracked castings and masses of rust I have no idea how water had found its way through there

(Picture of Brass Widget?)

The Brass disk caught my eye looking like part of a gasket. You are lucky to get this picture as the casting fell into several parts after my first photograph. To reveal a brass widget (ok you give me the technical name and I will put it in!).

(Damaged Manifold Housing for Thermostat)

The brass widget holds down the thermostat with a rubber gasket between. The widget looks like it is turned from the solid and has a series of holes in the narrow centre section. Looking at Andora’s manifold it is now clear how the water flow is controlled. Better than that I now have a part which was missing…explains why my thermostat was floating about.

(Thermostat)

You can just see the gasket on the remains of the old thermostat and I was becoming optimistic that my good one might be a correct part after all. Two hours of very delicate archaeological digging in a solid mass of rust and I freed a very frail, corroded, but original thermostat of the same pattern!

(Widget?)

Two parts, the widget and the thermostat that last saw the light of day in a fishing vessel and have definitely been there for a very long time. I am happy these are correct parts, Now all I have to do is find a supplier for new ones all ideas welcome.
