Ref No 014

Good morning! We are looking for a Bolinder Historian! On Lake Titicaca, Peru, the original steam engine in the gunboat-cum-tramp steamer, YAVARI (built in 1862 in GB and carried piecemeal up the Andes to the Lake to be re-assembled and launched in 1870) was replaced in 1914 by a Bolinder 4 cylinder Model M II BHP 320 RPM 225. Following a complete overhaul, this engine is fully operational.

Our query is whether, given the date and model, was it designed to run on parrafin or diesel and if diesel, which grade?

Within the programme to modify the YAVARI to 21st century safety standards, we are working on perfecting the Bolinder's performance.
The full story of the YAVARI is told on              www.yavari.org

A supplimentary:- we know of an engine of this size, though not as old, in Stockholm Lightship, but does anyone know of any other of this type anywhere?

Any information gratefully received. Meriel Larken (Project Director)

Hi, All!

I would very much like to know what became of the office Bolinder once had (circa 1962) in London (UK). In particular I would be interested in the books of account of that period.

Rather of an odd request, I admit, but there is a very special reason why some of these (Cash Books, General Ledgers and Personal Ledgers) should be preserved for as long as any Bolinder would last, i.e. just about forever!

Many thanks.

Italian Bolinder

Can Anyone throw any light on this!!

Hello,

my name is Davide Gnola, I'm director of Museo della Marineria (maritime/fishing museum) in Cesenatico, Italy, on the west coast of Adriatic Sea.

We have a section devoted to the first marine engines, where we have a Bolinder engine. We know that this is an important engine for the history of navigation, but we lack of  specific info's about this: the engine seems to be made in Italy, but we can't find any notices about italian Bolinders.

Can you help us with some infos and references? I hope it can be interesting also for you.

The plank over the engine said:
"Bolinder Italia
Fabbricazione italiana
Tipo V3M15S (?)  N. 312360
8/10 CV    900 1000 Giri/Min.
Soc. An. Motori per la Pesca - SAMP
Roma"

Translated is:
"Bolinder Italy
Made in Italy
Type ....  Serial number...
8/10 Horse Power  - 900 / 1000 Round per Minute
[made by] SAMP - Anonymous Society for Fishing Engines - Rome"

Thanks in advance

Sincerely yours

Dr. Davide Gnola             Images

I have recently acquired ex FMC Motor Bramble as a long term restoration project. The boat is currently at Dadfords Wharf
(Ian Kemps yard on the Stourbridge 16) and is about to be lifted out for work on extending her back to original length to
be started, I believe she was cut down to her present length of 35ft in the mid 1960’s by the simple expedient of taking
out the straight section of the hull and then rejoining the two ends. I meant to ask Ron Hough exactly when it was done
as he used to have her at that time; he was moored near my other boat over Christmas. However I will be seeing him
again later in the year and hope to see some of his collection of photographs of Bramble then. There is currently an HR2
with the boat and I also have a JP3 as an alternative, however I eventually hope to have the boat back to original spec as
time and money allow (if ever) I understand it was originally fitted with a 9hp Bolinder so long term a Bolinder is the very
ultimate ambition and wonder if anyone has any further information on the original engine fitted, and also if anyone knows
of similar engines around which would be suitable for eventual fitting when restoration of the boat is completed.
Fortunately I am being helped by Joe Hollingshead so could not ask for better assistance when it comes to Bolinders

Richard Lacy

Any Information that can be provided about Bramble would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
Does anyone out there have some detailed dimensions for the internals of the Bolinder semi diesel engines. I am after dimensions and or drawings for these engines with the following dimensions in particular: Bore, Stroke, Piston length, Main Bearing diameter & width, Big End Bearing diameter & width, Little End / Gudgeon Pin dimensions. Also the number & type of piston rings and the compression ratio.

Best Regards,

I own an Irish Canal Boat 68M which had a Bolinder in it from 1936 when it was built until 1980 when it went out of
Service. I met a guy from England about 10 years ago who told me that he had (or) knew where 68M's Bolinder was in the
UK. If anyone knows where this Bolinder is I would be interested in finding out about it.

Saw on your homepage that someone wanted a replacement thermostat to an engine with broken thermostat housing etc. The thermostat wanted shown on the picture can be bought from"lantmannen maskin" in Sweden. Their partnumber is 6211541, the cost is 862 SEK. I just bought one for my 1113 engine.

Hi!

We live on a Dutch barge on the fringes of west London and have inherited a lovely Bolinder whose only blight is a non-
functional thermostat. The previous owners seem to have managed this by installing a tap of sorts which one has to open
and close in line with the temperature. As you can imagine this is an arduous task! Is there any one out there who can
help us source a thermostat…..or, failing that, who might know of a better way to circumvent the problem??

Great web site and pleased to discover like-minded Bolinder fans!

Jacques

Hello

I have been seeking information on the 160 hp Bolinder semi-diesel available in 1916. It was used in an Arctic vessel, the
Great Bear, and I would like to know its fuel consumption. Do you know or could you advise me whom to ask?

Thank you.  Paul Spitzer
