Lubricating System

The dependability, life and economical operation of an engine are largely determined by the
efficiency of it's lubricating system and the care and attention devoted to it. It is for this reason
that Bolinder lubricating system has been designed for simplicity and automatic function.
Under normal conditions all that is needed is to maintain the correct oil level and check the
oil pressure at regular intervals. The oil pump, driven from a gear o the crankshaft front end,
sucks oil from the sump and feeds it to the various lubricating points - main and big-end
bearings, piston pins, valve mechanism timing gear, etc. Part of the oil is bypassed through
the filter back to the sump to achieve continuous oil cleaning.

Oil is fed to the valve mechanism by so-called shot lubrication from the camshaft bearing at
the front end of the engine, implying that the oil is supplied intermittently. This arrangement
restricts the amount of oil supplied and prevents excessive lubrication. To prevent the pump
sucking up particles collecting at the bottom of the sump, the oil is first passed through a
strainer in the sump. The cylinder walls are splashed lubricated by oil from the big-end and
piston pin bearings. Governor lubrication is by splash oil from the timing gears.

To prevent excessive oil pressure when starting in cold weather and to maintain constant oil
pressure ( pump capacity exceeds that required for lubricating the engine ) a reduction valve
permits oil to return to the sump without passing through the lubricating system. This valve
is on the side of the cylinder block, under the camshaft gear. Oil pressure is 40-60 lb/sq.in.
( 3-4 leg/sq.cm.) at normal r.p.m. (1.500) and normal engine temperature 160-175deg
F(70-80deg CD). Always make sure that vessels and containers, measures, funnels, filter pipes,
etc for oil are absolutely clean. if there are even the smallest particles in the lubricating oil
of an engine it is certain to give trouble before long.
